Named for the incredible rock formations scattered throughout the property, often literally split open as trees grew through them, Split Rock leans a bit more contemporary than most of my work. Lofty and bright, the house has wide-plank white oak floors throughout and a double-height vaulted great room at its heart. The centerpiece is a floor-to-ceiling wood-burning fireplace clad in hand-hewn tile, paired with Noguchi lanterns to echo its warmth and light. Zia Tile, upon seeing it, described the fireplace as a surface that "looks as warm and comfortable as your favorite down duvet."
The living continues outdoors, where we built a series of plein air rooms for gathering: a dining area, a sitting area, a full outdoor kitchen, and a fire pit. Even in its more modern language, Split Rock stays true to what we always chase: a home that is warm, grounded, and completely at home in its landscape.
