Passed over for more than a year, this property made us look closer. Studying the topography, we spotted a flat acre at the very top, so we bushwhacked our way up to see for ourselves and found the view we had hoped for, opening east toward the Taconics and the Berkshires. We set the house deep in the woods for a secluded feeling that stays close to town, reached by a long drive that winds gently through the trees and builds anticipation the whole way up.

The house sits quietly on the ridge, designed to reveal itself slowly. At its heart is the great room, with vaulted ceilings, a wood-burning fireplace, and a wall of glass holding the valley. It is an ideal place to start the morning, watching the sunlight burn the fog off the mountains. The kitchen was built to last and to be lived in, with a 48-inch AGA range, handmade tile, and Taj Mahal quartzite that will only age more beautifully with time. The whole house is full of quiet decisions like that, because I build every home as if it were mine to pass down for generations.
