One of our most personal projects, this renovation called for restraint: adding what was needed while quietly blending into the original structure.
Farmhouses of this era sat straight and tall on their quiet country lanes, so to honor that close companionability, we designed an addition that looks as though it were added slowly, over generations. From the road, it reads as a small, older addition, exactly as it should. Inside, though, the new space does quiet, practical work. A den, mudroom, powder room, laundry, storage hallway, light-filled office, and bedroom suite add real space and livability. Our mason matched the original bluestone foundation perfectly, so old and new meet as if they had always been together.
The same instinct shaped the second structure on the property. By design it appears as an unassuming barn, but inside it is the soul of the place: guest house, pool house, music room, and great room all at once. Like the addition, it hides its ambition behind a quiet, familiar face.
This property is proof of something we believe deeply: that the most successful buildings are the ones that never announce themselves.
